Books on my Skirt OOTD

I wore the above outfit to campus for teaching and student meetings. I wrote a bit about this Garnet Hill skirt when I reviewed the Tommy Hilfiger Book Print Shirtdress. I also wore it to have dinner and see the Lion King with my mom and siblings for her birthday. It is a comfortable, versatile piece. Although it is indeed a bit poufy and the cotton lining sometimes gets bunched up when wearing tights, I am pleased with the purchase. I also think it is different enough from the library dress that I am glad to have both in my wardrobe.

Pumpkins with my pumpkin

Last weekend my family got together to visit Triple B Farms. We've been going every year since I was little. And this year there was the added excitement of introducing Emilia to the tradition. She took to it right away! My sister and I took photos with my camera and got some fun shots to help us remember the occasion.

Baby OOTD

This was the closest head to toe shot I got of me, outfit-wise... Playing airplane with E.

I think both my parents as well as Chris and I wound up with great holiday photo card contenders (all of which I am refraining from posting here since some recipients are also readers). We all took home pumpkins and pies and apple cider as well as other treats. And even better, we will always have the memories.

Kate Spade, Saturday, and Jack Spade Friends and Family!

Top row l-r: dress, scarf, bow bracelet, dress, bag, dress

So many sales are happening right now! But I'm especially excited about Kate Spade. Even though I feel like many of the clothing styles have gotten away from what drew me to the brand years ago, I still find plenty of fun things to covet. Use code FALL13FF to take a generous 30% off everything on katespade.com, jackspade.com, and saturday.com. I'm left wondering if I should buy a fancy diaper bag since I have a dress in the same print? I'm also contemplating my first Kate Spade Saturday purchase. I really like this cool green bag and think that the beach blankets would be useful for picnic and beach times in the future. The sale is on until October 20th so I have a little time to mull it over. Happy shopping!

Saks Friends and Family is on!

Outfits L-R:

Saks Fifth Avenue is offering 25% off (with the usual premier designer exclusions) with coupon code FRNFAM, now through October 20th, 2013. Above are some of my favorites. The sale section will offer the opportunity for a sale-on-sale situation! But as always, beware of the dreaded sale goggles. Happy shopping!

Pirates Themed Teaching OOTD

With the Pittsburgh Pirates' ending their multi-decade losing season streak and making their first postseason appearance in the lifetimes of many of my undergraduate students, I figured it would be acceptable to express my fandom on campus. Although they were already eliminated, it was such a great year to be a Pirates fan. Hopefully it didn't seem too unprofessorial to sport my classic logoman t-shirt.

Details:
J. Crew Factory Cardigan
Pirates t-shirt
Off Fifth house brand skirt
Spanx tights
Tory Burch Revas
Kors watch; David Yurman circle necklace

(Was) Warm Again OOTD

I wore this to campus when it was suddenly 80 degrees once again. Apologies for the crappy in office photo. But between pumping and jumping from meeting, to class, to class, there wasn't time for any more elaborate an exercise in blogging/narcissism.

My postpartum hair loss has turned around and is starting to fill out again so I have all this new growth which makes for a different kind of weirdness. But I'm resisting the urge to chop it for now.

I am so glad that I tracked down this dress in a size up. I don't have to worry about boob gap. It is nursing and pumping friendly. And it still yields a lot of compliments. I was lucky to discover that Porridge (the maker) still had some overstock they were selling on ebay for reasonable prices.

Details:
Two-Wheeler Shirtdress (from Anthropologie via ebay)
Nordstrom cardigan
Marc Jacobs studded mouse flats (I love these ones for fall!)
Kors watch, vintage bracelet, Yurman circle necklace

Style in Plain Sight

Wearing Norman Childs glasses in 2009

When I was in middle school, I decided that I wanted contact lenses. My parents obliged since my dad was a long time contact wearer. He taught me how to pinch my fingers together carefully to remove them and I learned through trial and error to also keep my then-tweenager nails short.

In a now-retired pair of Vogue glasses back in 2006

Contact lenses were liberating, if not a bit jarring. I went from wearing glasses everyday to having nothing on my face. Sure, I felt a little naked but I wore them religiously until I was probably 19. By then, "emo" music (and its slightly edgier albeit no less embarrassing musical cousin, "screamo") was rising in popularity and glasses became part of the "uniform." I was also into punk and riot grrl which offered interesting political commentary about "society" and the "status quo," perfect for a semi-angsty post-adolescent like myself. My critical thinking skills were sharpening thanks to my liberal arts education and these subcultural affiliations. Increasingly I became critical of prevailing notions about conventional beauty. I rejected Dorothy Parker's old adage that "boys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses." And I returned to my previous spectacled ways.

In my first part of designer eyeglasses (Prada) at the NMAH in 2009

I began wearing plastic frames that were slightly squared off. For me they signaled visually my most introspective and collegiate self. But I came to realize that I was operating under a false binary. Sometimes I liked wearing contacts! Sometimes I also wanted to be able to wear regular sunglasses! And by then my post-adolescent self-righteousness was beginning to mellow.

Wearing Coach sunglasses with my sister at her high school graduation party (2008)

Eventually I just made the daily glasses or no glasses decision based on my mood or the occasion. And that's the logic I use now. I tend to favor a pair of stylish eyeglasses when I work and contacts whenever I want to be "fancy" with a smoky eye and mascara (or when I just want to wear non-prescription designer sunglasses). I do love my eyeglasses and think that they are very much a part of who I am. I got my newest pair of rx glasses last November and am currently hunting for some cool prescription sunglasses. They will be my first ones as an adult! I have to decide whether I want to go big or go medium in terms of size. Most of my (non-rx) sunglasses are pretty big. But I want these to last a while so I might go for something more moderate. Once I find a pair I like it will be great to enjoy every configuration of options.

Quick Fall OOTD

I realize it has become blogger requisite to gush about the best of all the seasons. I too can't help rejoicing when I can break out my opaque tights, layers, and wool fabrics. I wore this ensemble to campus one day and to meet a friend for lunch on another. We met at Social in Bakery Square, so I decided to stop by Anthropologie and see if they had the sketchbook shirt dress in my size. They did not, sadly. I tried on what was there and still loved it but had to run before I could inquire about ordering the correct size, as (after being super pleasant and awesome during lunch) Emilia was turning quickly into a pumpkin.

After the 15% off promo the other weekend, I almost bought it but shipping would have basically ate up the discount. So it looks like I'm going to wait for a sale. A review will follow soon!

Emilia's fall wardrobe is super cute and I've enjoyed shopping for her as much if not more so than I used to enjoy shopping for myself.

Heads up that Bloomingdales Friends and Family is on. You can get 20% off most things. Happy shopping!

On me:
See by Chloé dress
Streets Ahead bow belt
Ferragamo Varina flats
Spanx tights
Kors watch; Yurman necklace

On her:
Outfit 1: Carters tunic; Tea Collection leggings; Tommy Hilfiger shoe socks
Outfit 2: Mini Boden corduroy pinnie; Baby gap onesie;  Gymboree tights; Koala Baby shoes
