Flights of Skirt Popback: Twinkle by Wenlan "Midnight Cygnus" Review

I had Twinkle by Wenlan's Midnight Cygnus skirt (item #923334) on my Anthropologie Wishlist for a while. When it made first cut but was still well over $100, I knew it was destined for a second markdown. And although this additional cut never displayed on the sale page (as far as I know) one day when I opened my wishlist, there it was for half off of half off. I pounced (free shipping makes it so low risk) and it arrived soon after. The skirt is beautiful in person. Very formidable brocade-type fabric in a wool/cotton/silk blend, layered over a full lining. Simple back zip. Pleats, pockets, and a fabric knot at the center of the waistband. I never saw the Flights of Swan dress in store, but imagine it is similar albeit a different shape and colorway.
I am wearing a size 8 here and I would say it runs small (like most TbW). I would have preferred a 10 in this style for added length and added space to house a post-lunch food baby. It does fit my waist, even though it looks painfully tight in the top center photo. To be clear, that is actually my t-shirt blousing over. Although I got it for a steal, I think I am going to have to return this one.

Too bad it didn't work it. I do like the way you paired it with a soft T shirt.

Jess--the skirt looks great on you. I don't think it looks too tight, but rather fitted at the waist. It's so beautiful on you and it really works into your aesthetics. As for the length, maybe in the fall/winter, with tights, you'd feel less exposed? I know you got a really good deal on it, but maybe keep it around until then and see if it works better for you?

In the end, though, if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't.

What a shame it didn't work for you, Jess. Such a pretty skirt.

Love your site, and the Twinkle by Wenlen looks great!

Question about the Marc by Marc Jacobs dresses: How would you describe their sizing?

Rad, thanks so much! In this heat, I can't bear to wear anything more substantial with sleeves.

Kate, Thanks I think. What a bizarre decontextualized link to Banana Republic's website, though. I hope you aren't spamming this site. I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt for now but know that future comments of that nature will be deleted.

Tricia, Thank you. Free shipping makes it low stakes to try out something. I don't think it is worth keeping if the 10 would have been preferable.

Tien, thanks so much! It is indeed fitted and you are really convincing me with the tights factor. I hadn't thought about that but am now thinking about holding onto it a while longer. haha !!

Carole, thanks so much! You are so sweet!

Marmaduke, thanks for the compliments! Re: MBMJ dresses, it does vary not only by style but also by season. Generally, I've found the line to accommodate a curvy figure in most cases. It runs on the larger side of things if you compare it with premier designer but on the usual side of things if you compare with most of Anthropologie's brands. If you have a specific dress you are curious about I can give more detailed advice but otherwise, you can see links to a lot of the dresses I have (and can provide direct guidance with regards to fit) here.

Marmaduke, as a followup, that link takes you to everything tagged MBMJ but eventually you will find plenty of dresses in the mix. If you have any questions about a specific dress you can comment here or email me at jesspgh at gmail dot com. Thanks for reading!

It is so pretty! Another great print. I hear you on wishing you had the next size up, but I don't think this one looks small at all. It would be very cute with tights.

I agree with Tien that I think this skirt is actually super flattering on you! I tried it on at my store a couple weeks ago (it was still $100 so I was not even dreaming of taking it back home, plus I do have the original Flight of Swans dress) and it looked *nowhere* as good on me as it does on you!

Desert Flower and Goldenmeans, thank you for the compliments. I think I will try it with tights when the weather breaks.

Hi! New to your blog - found you by searching this skirt! Got it on sale at Anthro today - apparently a very late return and I was told it was an internet item only. Lovely lovely skirt and I agree with Tien, it looks great on you and it's a higher waisted fitter skirt. I imagine it with a black or silver silk top and heels for a nice dinner or wedding.

Anyhow - hope you visit me! I'll be following you!

Must be Midnight Cygnus day! I came across one on ebay this morning while searching for something else(not my size, rats) but remembered to save the search so the next time one comes up...

I agree with Tien- don't return in haste!

oops- old post! I thought it seemed familiar... I guess it's just Midnight Cygnus day for me...!

Did you end up keeping it, actually? Now that we're heading into autumn?

Thank you Sharon!

Diamondsandtulle, congratulations on the skirt! I really like your site. Thanks for visiting mine.

Hi Sarah! I did end up keeping it. I am glad I did. It is nearly tights season.
