Harem Pants

Harem Pants. They are everywhere. But you will not find them on adult me. I wore them in the early 90s. I was probably around 11 at the time. And I have to be honest. I LOVED them. They were silk and billowy, and adorned with a paisley print.

Now Anthropologie and Forever 21 (to name only a few of the mass, chain retailers) are trying to sell them to me again. Anthro actually has a WHOLE section dedicated to harem pants, some of which include the increasingly popular "drop crotch." The drop crotch phenomenon is a detail that I have affectionate rebranded as, "dumps like a truck." And I don't mean the type of dumps Sisco discussed in "The Thong Song."

screen grab from Anthro's website
Note the "view all harems" link!

I have yet to see these look "right" on someone who is not model-tall and model thin. And even when they look "right" they are still just off in a fashion victimy sense. My 5'3", fairly-stout body + drop crotch/harem pants = a catastrophe of hilarious proportions.

Perhaps it is fashion un-forward of me, perhaps you will argue that "we all said that about skinny jeans," perhaps it will betray my age to be so unwilling to revive this aspect of late 80s/early 90s style. Maybe it makes me seem out of touch? But as god is my witness, I will never wear harem pants again!

Hahah, I'm barely 5'0" and I still crave those pants in your screencap from Anthropology... but I know I have a problem :)

Very true, Chris!

Ashley, the anthro ones are among the least offensive I've seen. I do really want to see them on a non-model person of an average height.

Thank you for reading!

Oooh, I'm with you here. I don't plan on revisiting my youth by trying harem pants again. Until now, I've seen only 3 people look good in these and yes, they were all models. I'm sure a few people out there could rock it, but it's not a versatile look. There are a few more 'normal' harem ones on Asos as well.

Really glad to meet another bbag lover by the way :) I only have two as well, a black First and an anthra clutch. Also got two coin purses (electric blue and metallic silver). Plan on getting a City soon, but that depends on whether I like next seasons colors + leather, otherwise I'll try to find an older bag. Love your collection! I've been looking for the gris myself, but no luck yet...

Haute Shopper, I totally agree. I am sure there are people out there who can rock this look. But I tend to believe that they're also the types of people who look impossibly fantastic in everything. Sadly, that is not me. haha

re: bbags, I LOVE the anthracite color! Do you have regular or giant hardware? I love all of it but have only regular hardware pieces. Mine are both from 2006 and I bought them second hand (the only way I could afford them) via The Purse Forum. Thank you for the compliment. I'd love to see photos of your bags!

I've just blogged about this, I'm coveting a jersey pair, more sculptural than Princess Jasmine. I'm hoping at 5'6 I'll be okay...

KB, I bet you will be. I am short, and kind of stout so these are just a no-go on me. :)

What a popular post! I just want you to know that you shouldn't knock it til you've tried em! I tried on a pair of lavender poly blend genie pants at Limi Feu-- I didn't think they would work, but they were so comfy, and you could adjust the banding at the bottom to make them a fuller skirt style. I blogged about this! Now I'm jonesing for a pair of black jersey ones. Just plain ones that I can throw on in the summer.

Jesspgh and The Haute-Shopper: I have an Anthracite City. You know what that means! ;)

These are so, so bad. I can't wrap my mind around *choosing* to wear something that has an intentional "drop crotch." It just doesn't make sense to me.

Thought you might like to know that everyone's beloved American Apparel is trying to get in on the action...http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa8359.html

Dream Sequins, you're right. I probably shouldn't write them off until I've tried them on in person. And just because they wouldn't work on me doesn't' mean they won't be rocked by many!

Ooh.. anthracite is so gorgeous!

Jennifer Nicole, That is where I am coming from. But I will try to stay open minded in case I see them looking great on someone who isn't a model.

blahandorder, Thanks for the tip!! I am not at all surprised that they are cashing in on this trend and trying to score a piece of that market!
