Dulcie Dress Review

In honor of the Wednesday sale I figured it was time to post an overdue review of the Dulcie dress. This dress looks so pretty and ethereal on the rack, with its layers of ballerina-inspired tulle at the skirt and thicker knit bodice. But when I tried it on I definitely found myself reaching instead for something less poofy. I don't always dislike volume but even when I cinched the waist tie of this undeniably pretty dress, I still looked kind of waist-less. Sure I've worn and embraced plenty of sac dresses that also do that to my figure, but with such a saccharine sweet fit-and-flare design, it felt dissonant and odd.

I am wearing the medium so I would say the Dulcie is a forgiving dress that is mostly true to size, if perhaps a bit large. The arm holes were not too big or too small. The length was fine on me (though I am a bit short). It is a very pretty dress that I just didn't care for on my own body. I am sure it looks lovely on others. For the sale price, especially if you have an event looming, it is of significant quality. I didn't find the tulle or the knit of the bodice to be too itchy and I think with some proper styling this frock could make an excellent fancy winter cocktail dress. Hope to help!

Thank you! I do like a lot of full-skirted shapes but this one didn't do it for me. I definitely don't have a lifestyle to wear it much without a lot of styling (and I don't know if adding layers will do the waistless problem any favors).

Nice review, except that I think this dress looks great on you in both colour and fit.

I also gravitate toward full skirts often. Maybe that is part of why I am shying from this one. I am trying to branch out and don't see room in my closet for such a pretty cocktail dress.

I am sure from having seen fit and flare pieces you have worn on your blog that this dress must be dynamite on you! What a sweet gift! I bet it looked great with purple tights too. I hope you blog the outfit soon!

Although I do wear volume and poof on my lower half (in defiance of the rules about dressing for your shape or whatever) I thought this particular poof was a bit more than I can pull off in my daily life. Thank you for the comment!

See, that's funny.  I did a shopping consult for a friend to help her buy a party dress for her work Christmas party, and this is the dress we ended up choosing for her.  It looked GORGEOUS on her with tons of waist accentuation.  Perhaps because her body proportions are different than yours?  She has a large bust and tiny shoulders, so it worked well on her.  She wore it with black tights and sparkly pumps, and it was indeed perfect for a fancy winter cocktail dress.

Funny how differently things can fit.  Not that it isn't a lovely dress, and it does look pretty on you, but you're right--I think I'm used to seeing you in more waist-conscious pieces.

Fantastic review.  I think the dress looks amazing on you, actually, but I can sympathize with the full-skirted aversion...I love this dress in theory but I'm not sure I'd be able to wear it in my daily life.

I gravitate towards fill skirted pieces and love the Dulcie dress.  I do agree that it's not a dress for everyone, but you do look lovely in it.  I think it might be the placement of the waist of the dress and the fact that you can't belt it that makes it a little difficult for some body types.  I actually got this dress from my boyfriend for Christmas.  He must be reading my blog...haha.  I paired it with purple tights and sparkly gold flats for NYE and I plan to do the same for a wedding in February.  I am hesitant to wear it in daily life because it is so poofy, but I have seen others pair it with a blazer and black tights for casual Friday.

Great, thorough review!  I personally feel it is difficult to wear volume on the lower half of my body...in your words it just feels "odd."  The color of this dress is beautiful on you though and I am really loving the waist detail.  That said - I agree you could find a better fit for you! :-)

I bought this in black and I wear a skinny belt with it, so it can be belted. I also wear a black stretch blazer with sequins over it (bought at Banana Republic). It looks great on you!
