Consume or Consumed (and me) featured on AAUW's blog!

A few years ago I was so fortunate to be among the recipients of an American Fellowship from the American Association of University Women. Recently the AAUW contacted me about being the subject for a profile on their blog that would trace how the fellowship award helped launch my career, how pregnancy has shaped my professional identity, and how my blog creates a fun outlet for creativity that ties into at least some of my research and teaching. The feature came out this week and I am so happy to share it! Check it out here.

That's a great piece!

I'm ABD and just starting off a blog and I finally decided to not put any clearly identifiable information on it because I'm concerned that putting forth a public non-academic persona will hurt my career. So I really admire female bloggers in academia who aren't afraid to talk about fashion and appearances.

I totally understand your desires to maintain privacy and separate spheres. I definitely felt that more so in the beginning. I know that one can have field specific concerns in addition to the fear of seeming frivolous to other academics in general. I've written a bit about both but in a nutshell, I have slowly become comfortable with being public. In my field a blog isn't necessarily a professional liability because of the disciplinary push to study and understand venues for strategic digital communication. In many ways understanding the logistics of blogging have been able to tie neatly into my teaching and research interests. I do wish I had more time for the blog as I realize if I made a few key improvements it could grow. But it will never supersede my career in terms of priorities.

The blog has also yielded various networking and digital journalism opportunities as well as the chance to gain practical knowledge about data management, web analytics, SEO/SEM, page rank, etc. But if these subjects didn't connect with my professional life I'd feel a lot more pressure to remain anonymous.

I'm excited to read your blog, regardless of whether you decide to be "out" or not!!

I can definitely see how it would actually be beneficial in certain fields! Unfortunately I don't work with critical theory or media or anything like that. Mainly I do policy related research, which somehow seems particularly uptight about these things.

Also, thanks for the follow! I'm really aiming to get done by spring right now. So there should be ample posting about that even if it is relative anonymous.

There are some interesting points in time in this article but I don’t know if I see all of them center to heart. There is some validity but I will take hold opinion until I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we want more! Added to FeedBurner as well
