Hooray! The Spinning Lace dress (sold out online from Anthropologie but you can buy it
here) is even more lovely than I remember. But it is also SO DRESSY. And clearly not something that I could wear to a wedding. So, I ask you: How can I make this wearable/appropriate for day? After all was said and done, it was 70% off so I am happy to own it. But can I wear this to campus or will I look like Professor Muffet (as in, Little Miss)?

It's so pretty!! And the fit looks great on you. I"m sure you can work into your daily routine. You must find a way bc it would be shame for it not to be seen :)
This is a perfect dress for you! It looks so nice!
Knock out! Why on earth wouldn't you wear this to a wedding? The black sash keeps it from looking like the bride. :) you look absolutely fanfrickingtastic in that baby! I'll admit, tho, that I'm not so sure about the dress for teaching. It's a bit "much" for a professional look, even with a black cardi or whatever. The lace is the clincher for me. I see it as a going out to dinner dress...any sort of party...
Question: do you think this one is TTS? I've been thinking of hunting it down but have never tried it on. I'm 36C, size 8 usually.
I was just talking about this dress with a friend! It is a very pretty dress but you are right - very dressy. I myself have yet to figure out how to dress it DOWN. However, I did swap out the black grosgrain belt for a satin teal one and then I wore it with teal shoes I bought at Target. It was still dressy but a bit more "fun". :)
St. Germain - I found the dress TTS. I am usually size 0 or 2 in Anthro dresses and I found both sizes fit me with the size 2 having a bit more room in the bust.

You've got to hold on to it because it's beautiful on you and I love the lace. I suggest to dress it down for work by pairing it with a cardi buttoned up so the dress can look like a skirt, then belt it!! I'm really trying to find one in a 0 or 2....
long black blazer maybe? Man, I love blazers...they dress up and simmer down at will!
Oh Wow! It looks gorgeous on you. I just realized that the lace overly on the dress looks exactly like the Cloaked In Roses Jacket.
Leather Belt and Boots with a short Leather Jacket. Only way to fly in this dress.
Yay! You found it! It's absolutely gorgeous in it. I believe if you throw a cardigan and tights over any dress, you can make it work for day!
I'm insanely jealous by the way - I want this in a size 2 SO bad! How did you find it?? I've been told numerous times it's sold out company-wide.
The dress looks beautiful on you! I've seen a few bloggers begin to wear it paired with cardigans, which seems to do wonders for dressing it down.
Incidentally, what is the name of the green dress in the background of your picture over your right shoulder? I tried it on last week and thought it was beautiful, but didn't realize it was a sale item! Any information to help me track it down would be much appreciated :-)
Pamela, thanks so much! I agree it is too pretty to live in a closet.
Ady, thank you!
St Germain, although I personally wouldn't care if every guest to my own wedding showed up in white/ivory, I am too timid to breach the convention because it is difficult to gauge how others feel about it. I do think it might be too frou frou for teaching though. I would say it is on the smaller end of TTS. I am wearing a 6 in the above photo and that fit slightly small in the bust for me (I am a 34dd). I bought an 8 though to be honest I would have bought the 6 if that was all that was available.
Colleen, swapping the belt is a really great idea! I am going to try it just to see what options I have.
Dea, thanks so much! I am going to try that. It will also make the top more modest. I hope you find one! It would be fantastic on you!
Thatdamngreendress, so true! I don't have a long fitted black blazer but maybe my boyfriend style one will be a nice casual juxtaposition?
Laura, thank you! I thought the same thing when I saw the cloaked in roses jacket! I wonder if I should grab that and make a makeshift 1960s style dress suit combo? haha I love the idea of grunging this up with leather and some boots! Thanks for the inspiration!
Kim, thank you! I hope you find one. I feel so lucky. I had given up hope but posted again in the weekend store report thread on Effortless Anthro about wanting one and a reader said she saw one (that might have been a return?) that morning. I called within an hour and it was still there! What was frustrating was that in store they rang it up at $180 instead of $140 but I got a price adjustment (and paid around $100 since the store I bought from was still doing the extra 25% off). I hope you find one!
JG, thanks so much! I think that is a great idea. I just have to decide which cardi is the right length/color for this. BTW, I commented on your blog but I think the one you are talking about is Gratsby Gardens dress by James Coviello for Anthropologie. It was indeed on sale back in October when I first tried on Spinning Lace. Unless you mean the right of the photo which is an Anna Sui for Anthropologie dress (also on sale but still pricey).
Yep, that's the one. Shoot, I can't believe I let it slip by! The tag only showed the full price and I didn't recognize it as a sale piece. Sigh, the hunt begins! I don't suppose the dress in the fitting room with you is anywhere close to a size 6, is it?
I love Laura's idea of bitching up that pretty lace with a leather belt and boots. It's an absolutely beautiful dress Jess, glad you found it.
This dress is lovely and the cut is PERFECT for you. Even if it's hard to dress down it's worth having in your closet.
So jealous! That dress looks amazing on you. One popped up on Ebay in my size but the seller listed it at full price!
it's so pretty!! glad you were able to get it!
For work, I would pair it with leather belt, boots, and a blazer.
this may be out there and I'm having a hard time picturing it myself, but how about adding a leather jacket over it? It that's too much then I 2nd the boots and belt idea to toughen it up a bit for day wear. It's so lovely on you though, perfect as is for a party!
*Beautiful*! So glad you managed to get it Jess :)
That is amazing on you. I'd wear it with a blazer and tights. I wish I had bought this, because when I think about it, it's actually not *that* different than wearing a lace skirt (which I do regularly) if you break up some of the lace with a cardigan, scarf, tights, etc.
