Babergh dress
Anthro cardi from like.. 2005 or 2006ish?
Chie Mihara pumps
I have to attend some meetings on campus this week and am trying to determine what to wear. I like this outfit but I feel like I will probably be a little overdressed. Especially for summer time when campus is pretty quiet and most of the students are off. I worry I will show up and everyone else will be in Tevas and cargo shorts or something. The higher ups will be in attendance so I think I would rather be more rather than less formal. What do you think?

This happens to me all the time--I show up for after-semester meetings in a pencil skirt and fancy cardigan and heels, and all my colleagues are wearing cargo pants and tee shirts. I worry a little bit that it makes me look like a twinkie. But I keep doing it anyway.
Hi! Love the dress, but not the cardigan so much. But I'd always go for a little over dressed then under dressed. :)
haha I know what you mean! I think I will just do my thing and hope for the best.
Yeah overdressed is preferable, in my experience. Thank you for the feedback! For the layer on top, maybe I will something a bit more structured? I grabbed this one because it is light enough that if I need to go in between buildings (in 90 degree heat) I won't have to disrobe. But I can probably find something else that works similarly but hangs less sloppily.
Oh, this rusty coloured cardigan looks amazing with the Babergh! I absolutely love the unexpected colour pairing here. If you're feeling quite uncertain about it though, maybe a more casual dress would be better for you? You could always dress up something like the Beda or Tiny Windows (I don't remember if you have those) with heels and pretty accessories. The Babergh IS a pretty amazing, dressy piece, so it may be a bit too dressy for your purposes here. Wish I could help more! Look forward to seeing what you choose!
I really like this dress and IMO think it would be lovely for your retreat.
I love the dress and I don't think it will be out of place for a meeting. Love the cardigan color on you too!
Always better to be overdressed than under!!! I love that dress and tried to track it down once I decided I wanted it (way too late) and never found it... Maybe ebay!
I really wish that I hadn't passed on that dress! Looks fabulous on you.
That dress is utterly lovely on you, but I tend to think you will be overdressed. I went to an MA defense as a committee member a couple of weeks ago and felt way overdressed. Since then I have been dressing down a little bit because I'm also not actually teaching. Those who are tend to be spotted in shorts or khakis. I try to meet them half-way by going for cotton shirt dresses or a skirt and a tee.
I love this dress! Like another commenter said, it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. But if you want to dress down a little, maybe go for a pencil skirt with a cute top and bring a blazer just in case?

I think you look fabulous, but maybe you will be overdressed a little bit. I see faculty mostly wearing flowy cottons around campus right now (though who knows if they're going to any meetings). You could try a dress with a little less structure maybe, if you're worried about it. Am I remembering correctly that you bought an adorable silk dress from Kate Spade not too long ago? That one may work too!
Wow! That dress truly looks amazing on you! I agree...better to be over than under dressed, but if you're worried about it being too dressy maybe try a shirt dress with heels. Your new kate spade dress perhaps?
You look amazing in that dress, but I think it would be too fancy for a faculty retreat. I think you can find a happy medium with a cotton dress or maybe a collared shirt tucked into a skirt or even some capri pants.
Although I don't have either of those shirtdresses, I do have cotton shirtdresses that I can probably wear to campus. I think it will also be more manageable to be in a lighter fabric on a hot day. Thanks for the advice and the kind words!
Thanks so much! After thinking about it some more, I might save it for one of the back-to-school dinner functions come September, since it seems professional enough but dressy. I'm going to go with something less structured but still professional for this week.
Thanks Zon! I have decided to save this dress for a more formal campus occasion. I am probably going to wear some solid separates for the meetings.
I agree! But I think I will be slightly overdressed even in some simpler, lighter cotton separates.
I hope you find a Babergh because it would be so amazing on you!
I love this idea! I think I am going to use it and save the Babergh for one of the back to school faculty functions in September. Thanks so much!
I hope you find one! I envision this dress being so fantastic on you. Thanks so much!
Thank you for the advice and the kind words!
I think I am going to go with some cotton separates so that I don't end up feeling too out of place.
That's so cool that you were on a grad student's committee! I aspire to it someday... I assume this means you have new digs and if so, congratulations!
Thank you for the advice, Rachel! I agree this might be a little over the top for campus in the summer.
I love that idea! It is actually a two day retreat so I think one of my outfits will be your exact suggestion. :)
Also, thanks for the kind compliment!
Good advice for sure! It is a two day thing so I am probably going to go with a simple shirtdress one day and some cotton separates the other. I should probably get some crops or capris cause I don't really have any but they seem useful. Thanks for the compliment, also!
Violetta! Violetta! That seems like the perfect dressy-but-could-be-casual-ish compromise!
sigh. jealous.
However the Babergh fits you beautifully, so we insist that find another occasion, maybe for a back to school event as you suggested- it looks great with the rust topper!
I adore this dress on you!! So glad you got it :)
that dress is so incredibly pretty!
This is a beautiful look, but it would definitely be too dressy for our planning meetings.
